Opportunities for bio-degradable films in food packaging

In The Netherlands, 35% of the plastics production is used as packaging material. In addition to the significant growth of theplastics production, the amount of plastics entering the waste stream is also still growing. This increase occurred despite the efforts of the government, industry and consumers to reduce the amount of packaging material in the waste stream. In collaboration with an industrial partner, we have investigated the application of bio-degradable multi-layer films in food packaging. The research project is aimed at identification of possible groups of products for which these films are suited, the comparison of the performance of the films with existing packaging solutions, and the identification of additional added values of the bio-degradable films which can arise from the unique material properties of these films.
