In recent years, a range of new techniques such as modified atmosphere packaging, gas packaging, and active packaging have been developed and successfully applied in practice in order to minimise the quality decay of the packed product. In this article, an integrated approach is outlined for the development and optimisation of an active packaging concept. The approach is illustrated by presenting some aspects of the development of an active packaging concept for cut flowers.
